Energy from Hydroelectricity (Hydro Power)

Hydroelectricity is a form of hydropower and is the most widely used form of renewable energy throughout the world. It produces no waste and does not produce carbon dioxide (CO2) which is one of the greenhouse gases.

Hydroelectric power is generated by harnessing the power of moving water. Hydro electricity extracted from water depends not only on the volume but on the difference in height between the source and the water's outflow.

Hydro power systems convert potential energy stored in water held at height into kinetic energy movement to turn a turbine to produce electricity. A micro hydro plant which is below a 100kW is an attractive means of producing electricity.

To benefit from a hydro power system on a domestic scale, the water must be relatively close to home or where the power will be used or to a suitable grid connection. Hydroelectric systems can be connected to the main electricity grid or as a part of a stand-alone (off-grid) power system. In a grid connected system, unused energy generated can be sold back to electricity companies.

In places where there is no access to any main power connection, a micro hydro system can provide a steady and reliable source of electricity for lighting, electrical appliances, space and water heating.

Hydro power produces no carbon dioxide or harmful emission in contrast to burning of fossil fuels.
